Advanced Alkylation Measurement Solution from Invensys Wins Processing Magazine’s Breakthrough Product Award

Innovative solution supports real-time safety and environmental excellence for refineries

JANUARY 05, 2012 / PLANO, TEXAS - Invensys Operations Management, a global provider of technology systems, software solutions and consulting services to the process and manufacturing industries, today announced that its ACA.HF Advanced Alkylation Measurement Solution has been named a Breakthrough Product of the Year for 2011 by Processing magazine. The award recognizes products, services and/or technologies that have made significant contributions to the process industries within the past year.

Invensys Operations Management’s ACA.HF Advanced Alkylation Measurement Solution brings new levels of simplicity, cost effectiveness and employee safety to the delicate task of hydrofluoric acid (HF) monitoring within refineries. The solution replaces conventional manual laboratory sampling and Fourier Transform Near Infrared (FTNIR) analysis with a measurement system that monitors HF levels by analyzing differential responses safely and from online sensors in real time.

“The traditional approach to HF measurement involves taking manual samples and then analyzing them in a laboratory. Not only is that method not very accurate, it exposes lab workers and other plant personnel to extremely dangerous toxins,” said Dave Woll, vice president, ARC Advisory Group. “While other more-recent FTNIR techniques are available, adapting them for real-time online monitoring is complex and costly. The Invensys solution, on the other hand, uses a direct measurement method to monitor HF levels. The solution has already proven to be highly reliable, and it significantly lowers HF acquisition and other plant operating costs, while improving plant safety.”

“The advanced software in the ACA.HF Advanced Alkylation Measurement Solution enables highly accurate modeling and analysis within hazardous operating environments,” said Tobias Scheele, vice president of advanced applications, Invensys Operations Management. “This unique measurement and control solution also minimizes the potential for corrosion and supports environment and safety excellence by eliminating any potential sample exposure for plant and laboratory personnel. Additionally, since the solution was installed at the test refinery in Texas well more than two years ago, there have literally been zero maintenance costs.”

“Processing plants of all kinds rely on the latest innovative technology to efficiently, accurately and safely meet their production and sustainability goals,” said Nick Phillips, managing editor of Processing magazine. “The Invensys ACA.HF Advanced Alkylation Measurement Solution helps fulfill these goals by helping refinery operations achieve control, safety and environmental excellence. We are happy to recognize this solution as one of our Breakthrough Products of 2011.”
